A Nashville Singer-Songwriter (and ALIVE Favorite) Debuts Two New Songs With Music Legend Chaka Khan
Nashville singer-songwriter—and ALIVE favorite—Amy Stroup has been infiltrating pop culture for nearly 10 years, mostly through her moody, genre-leaping singles that are featured on all your favorite prime-time shows, from "Grey's Anatomy" to "Dancing with the Stars." But even if you think you haven't heard Stroup's voice yet, you probably have—and her recent songwriting collaboration with a bona fide music legend is bound to hit your ears soon.Stroup recently nabbed two songwriting credits on Chaka Khan's new album, "Hello Happiness." The first track, "Like a Lady," is a callback to some of the Queen of Funk's grooviest '70s-era hits, with a sly nod to modern pop. It comes complete with disco violins and the best piano breakdown that dissolves into a space-age echo chamber where Chaka's voice refracts like light off a mirror ball. The second track, "Ladylike," is the island-vibes remix; if "Like a Lady" cast Khan as a woman newly in love and shouting it from the dancehall rooftops, "Ladylike" is about this same woman a few months later on vacation with her now-longtime beau, luxuriating in the sun and the sensation of settling into good love. Think of it as how Khan got her groove back, emphasis on the groove.Writing for a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee might be enough action for some songstresses, but Stroup's not done. Her own single "Made" was recently featured in the Jennifer Lopez holiday box office hit "Second Act," and she spent the fall and early winter touring for her most recent album, Helen of Memphis.Subscribe to her newsletter to stay informed on what she's up to next.
